On the night of January 17, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that there were killed and injured in the city as a result of an "explosion of unknown origin."
The mayor reported this on social media, as well as the correspondents of the Suspilne TV and radio broadcaster.
Terekhov reported about the explosion in Kharkiv and its consequences at 2:08 a.m.
"As a result of an explosion of unknown origin, we have killed and injured in a high-rise building in the Saltivskyi District. We are investigating the details," the mayor said.
Later, Terekhov reported two killed.
"The body of the second victim was found at the site of the explosion. Search and rescue operations are underway," the mayor said.
Later it became known that the victims of the explosion of unknown origin in Kharkiv were a man and a woman, their bodies are being unblocked from the rubble, Yevhen Vasylenko, a spokesman for the Kharkiv Region's State Emergency Service, told Suspilne.
According to him, the explosion occurred in an apartment on the fifth floor of a 16-storey building on Valentynivska Street at half past two in the morning.
"The explosion damaged the ceilings between three floors. As of 2:30 a.m., the rubble is being dismantled. The cause of the explosion is being established," said Yevhen Vasylenko.
"The explosion in a high-rise building in the Saltivskyi District of Kharkiv, according to preliminary data, occurred inside an apartment on the fifth floor," Bohdan Hladkykh, director of the city's emergency department, told Suspilne.
According to him, the killed man and woman were in this apartment, and their identities are being established. Hladkykh said that a resident of the apartment below was injured, and another resident of the building went to the doctors with an acute stress reaction.
