American investment fund demands USD 225 billion from russia for debts of russian empire through court

The American investment fund Noble Capital RSD has filed a lawsuit in the US federal court against the russian authorities, demanding recognition of the russian federation's legal succession to the bonds of the russian empire, issued back in 1916. This is reported in the US court records.

The lawsuit was registered in the District of Columbia court.

"The russian federation, violating the doctrine of succession of power, has refused and continues to refuse to fulfill obligations under state debts taken on by its predecessor, the russian empire," the document states.

The defendants in the case are the russian federation, its Ministry of Finance and the National Welfare Fund, and the total amount of the claims reaches USD 225.8 billion. The plaintiffs claim that this century-old debt can be repaid at the expense of russian sovereign assets that were frozen in the West after the annexation of Crimea and the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the scale of the claims, the interviewed lawyers assess Noble Capital's chances of success as extremely low. Experts suggest that the real goal of the lawsuit may not be to recover funds, but to create a legal precedent for the US authorities. Thus, the investors are trying to offer an alternative to the political confiscation of russian assets in favor of Ukraine, transferring the discussion to the plane of private law disputes over old state debt.
