The situation with energy supply in Kyiv has reached a critical point due to a combination of generation shortages and large-scale damage to the grid. Yasno CEO Serhii Kovalenko has announced this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
It is noted that the city is in a "mix" of restrictions: the country produces less electricity than it wants to consume, and network facilities are so damaged that they cannot even transmit the available resource. The damage from the shelling was compounded by the weather factor - temperatures of -17°C radically increase consumption and disable the system.
"The number of accidents is insane. Frost has added to all the outages, and all this together creates a rather difficult situation," Kovalenko emphasized.
Power engineers are forced to balance the grid so that the light is on for an average of 3 hours, followed by 9-12 hours of restrictions, and Kovalenko urged Kyiv residents to be prepared for the fact that there will be no quick changes for the better.
"I don't know if any quick improvement is possible. I would not use the word "improvement" in the coming days, weeks. Because when you have electricity for 3 hours on average and 10 hours without it, these are terrible conditions," he admitted.
The only real chance for relief in the energy company is the end of the period of extreme cold. Since some facilities are beyond repair, the power system will be able to exhale only with a decrease in consumption.
"We believe that we need to hold out for a week until the weather improves a bit," summarized Serhii Kovalenko.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that amid the strikes by the aggressor country russia and deteriorating weather conditions, an emergency situation would be introduced in the Ukrainian energy sector.
On January 14, emergency power outages continue in Kyiv due to the emergency mode of the power system operation situation on the right bank of Kyiv has deteriorated to the level of the left bank.
