Thanks to the actions of Ukraine and a number of partner countries, a fifth of the so-called "shadow fleet" has stopped. Because of this, the aggressor country russia is forced to attract new vessels.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this following the report of the First Deputy Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine Oleh Luhovskyi.
According to Zelenskyy, Luhovskyi informed him about the non-public approaches of partners to communication with the russian side and the real attitude towards Ukraine and negotiations
Luhovskyi was also instructed to provide the partners with updated information on russia's attempts to expand its "shadow fleet."
"Thanks to our coordinated measures of pressure on the shadow fleet, at least 20% of the fleet's vessels have stopped, and Russia is trying to compensate for this loss by attracting new vessels. All of them should be added to the sanctions lists," Zelenskyy wrote.
The President added that Ukraine and partners will continue to put sanctions pressure on tanker captains and crews, as well as on companies that provide insurance services to ships.
Zelenskyy also said that the current restrictions on maritime exports of russian oil will result in a loss of at least USD 30 billion for russia.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, yesterday, January 12, BBC News wrote that the UK government is preparing a legal framework that will allow the British military to detain shadow fleet vessels.
As a reminder, at least 15 tankers of the "shadow fleet" changed their flag to the russian flag in the hope that this would allow them to avoid detention by the US military.
We also wrote that on January 9, in the Caribbean Sea, the US military detained the Olina tanker from the "shadow fleet". It was carrying a cargo of Venezuelan oil.
