The Grok AI chatbot, developed by Elon Musk's xAI company and built into the X social network, has caused an international scandal. In a number of countries, authorities have responded to the mass distribution of sexualized images of women and children that were created without their consent.
This is reported by the Associated Press.
The problem has sharply escalated after the launch last year of the Grok Imagine function - a tool for generating images and videos based on text queries. The chatbot also has a so-called spicy mode, which opens access to adult content.
In late December, users began to actively use Grok to create images that simulate the "undressing" of people in photographs. Among such images were both adult women and minors. According to the analysis, out of approximately 20,000 images generated between December 25 and January 1, about 2% contained images of children, including those in clear clothing or almost naked.
Against this background, France decided to expand criminal proceedings against the social network X after complaints from government officials about the spread of sexualized deepfakes. In India, the authorities gave the company an ultimatum, demanding that it remove illegal content and provide a report on security measures. Similar investigations have also been launched in Poland, Malaysia and Brazil.
In Brazil, MP Erika Hilton publicly called for the temporary disabling of X's AI functions until the checks are completed. She emphasized that a person's right to their own image cannot be nullified by the rules of use of the social platform.
As a reminder, Ukrainian users of the social network X criticized the new Grok function and compared the creation of deepfakes to sexual violence. At the same time, others continued to create "naked" images of female users.
