Germany confirms its readiness to continue political, financial and military support for Ukraine. In particular, after reaching an agreement on a truce, Germany is considering the possibility of deploying its military contingent in Ukraine's neighboring countries. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated this during a press conference following the meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing."
According to the Chancellor, Berlin does not set any strict limitations on the format of its participation in future security arrangements.
"I want to make it clear here about the nature and scope of the German contribution: the federal government and the German Bundestag must and will make a decision as soon as the conditions are clarified. On behalf of myself and the federal government, I would like to say that we do not exclude anything as a matter of principle," Merz emphasized.
The Chancellor emphasized that the goal of the coalition is to build a powerful Armed Forces of Ukraine. The members of the alliance plan not only to monitor compliance with the ceasefire, but also to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities on land, at sea and in the air. At the same time, each ally will independently determine the format of its assistance.
"On behalf of the federal government, I have stated that we are, of course, ready to participate in security guarantees. In what form we can do this is still an open question, because the entire package of security guarantees has not yet been finalized," the German Prime Minister said.
Friedrich Merz emphasized that security guarantees should be comprehensive. In his opinion, it is worth considering not only the presence of foreign forces directly in Ukraine, but also the strengthening of NATO's eastern flank. This will allow us to respond quickly in case of repeated aggression by russia.
But the key condition for such steps is an official ceasefire agreement with russia.
"And this ceasefire must then be ensured by appropriate military support for Ukraine... This is not just military support for Ukraine. This is military support for peace and freedom in the whole of Europe," Merz summarized.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Witkoff said that "significant progress" has been made on the peace plan in several areas.
