At least 16 people have been killed in a week of unrest in Iran, the country's largest protests in three years. It was reported by Reuters on Sunday, January 4.

Protests in Iran have been going on for a week. People across the country have taken to the streets over skyrocketing inflation, resulting in violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces, with human rights organizations reporting at least 16 deaths.

"The protests are the largest in three years, and while smaller than some previous outbreaks of unrest aimed at shaking the Islamic Republic, they come at a time of vulnerability, with the economy in ruins and international pressure mounting," the report said.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump threatened to come to the aid of the protesters if force is used against them, although he did not disclose possible US steps. In response, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Iran "will not yield to the enemy."

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 2, the semi-official Fars news agency and the human rights organization Hengaw reported the deaths of people during clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Iran.
