In 2025, Ukrainians bought USD 23.94 billion in cash currency, which is a historical record. Financial analyst Andrii Shevchyshyn writes this on Facebook.

According to the analyst, the peak demand occurred at the beginning and end of the year: January and the fourth quarter. On average, during these periods, Ukrainians bought USD 2.25 billion worth of currencies per month.

At the same time, sales of cash currency by the population also increased, updating the 4-year high, totaling USD 17.11 billion. Thus, the record of 2024 for the accumulation of foreign currency by Ukrainians was not broken.

"Thus, according to the results of 2025, the population bought USD 6.83 billion more cash than it sold. This is the second historical result. The highest figure was only in 2024, when the net purchase of cash currency by the population amounted to USD 9.84 billion," Shevchyshyn comments.

The dollar remains among the most popular currencies for Ukrainians, accounting for about 71% of foreign currency cash transactions, the expert concludes. The euro accounts for about 25% of transactions. Other cash currencies account for 3.5% of the Ukrainian market.

On the eve of the New Year, the euro has updated its historical high. The National Bank of Ukraine set the official exchange rate of the European currency at UAH 49.86 per euro as of December 31. Thus, the hryvnia lost 21 kopecks at once.

At the same time, the previous year was the worst for the dollar in the last decade. The US currency sank by 9.5% against a basket of major currencies due to US President Trump's trade war, which cast a shadow over the dollar's traditional status as a reliable asset for investors.
