Finnish telecommunications company Elisa has reported damage to the cable laid between Finland and Estonia along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland.
ERR reports this with reference to the statement of the Ministry of Justice and Digital Development of Estonia.
The Ministry said that on December 31, Elisa reported that at about five o'clock in the morning local time it discovered damage to the cable. It was damaged in the Estonian economic zone.
Elisa said that the damage could have affected some customers, but due to its redundant structure, the incident did not affect the provision of services in both Finland and Estonia
At the time of the cable damage, a ship was passing through the Gulf of Finland. It was detained by the Finnish Border Guard. It was established that the vessel's anchor chain was in the water at the time of detention.
Finnish law enforcement agencies have launched a criminal investigation. The possible involvement of the vessel in the damage to the communication cable is being checked.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in January this year, the Finnish company Fingrid called for the arrest of the Eagle S tanker, which is suspected of damaging the EstLink 2 cable in the Baltic Sea.
In October, it became known that a Finnish court dismissed the lawsuit against the Eagle S crew.
