During the talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, the parties failed to reach a final decision on the Donbas.
It was discussed at a joint press conference following the meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump.
The American president said that the parties have moved forward on this issue. "This issue has not yet been resolved, but we are much closer. It's a very complicated issue, but I'm confident we will resolve it," Trump said.
Commenting on russia's position that Ukraine must leave the entire territory of the Donetsk Region, Trump said: "That's what they want. But this issue will be worked out. I think we're moving in the right direction."
Later, he also suggested that the issue of the russian-occupied Ukrainian territories could be resolved "over the next months."
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for his part, emphasized that the Donbas issue remains extremely complex. "You know our position. We must respect our law, our people, our territory... We have completely different positions with the Russians here," he emphasized.
Speaking about possible decision-making mechanisms, Zelenskyy said: "When we talk about a referendum, this may be one of the keys... There is an opportunity to vote in parliament or hold a referendum."
We will remind, vladimir putin refused to consider the possibility of a ceasefire during the possible referendum in Ukraine on the so-called "peace plan", Trump said.
