James Cameron, who for years has been a sharp critic of artificial intelligence (AI), admitted that under certain conditions, AI can become a tool that will help reduce the production time of the next films of the "Avatar" franchise, but only within clearly defined ethical boundaries.
James Cameron said this during the show Q with Tom Power.
The third part of the series, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," was recently released. Its creation was one of the longest and most complex processes in modern Hollywood. The film was largely shot in parallel with the film "Avatar: The Way of Water," spending years developing new solutions in the field of motion capture and visual effects. According to available data, the budget of the film exceeded USD 400 million.
In a conversation on the show Q with Tom Power, Cameron explained that he does not plan to devote another eight years of his life to working on the next two sequels. According to him, speeding up production automatically means reducing costs, so he is looking for technological ways to optimize the process.
At the same time, the director emphasized that it is fundamentally important for him not to cross certain boundaries. He emphasized that AI should not replace actors, artists, screenwriters or the director himself, but can only be considered as an auxiliary tool within the framework of clear ethics.
Previously, Cameron has repeatedly included artificial intelligence in the top three existential threats to humanity - along with nuclear weapons and environmental destruction. He warned about the risks of militarizing AI and displacing people from creative professions, emphasizing that he "warned us about this back in 1984." Now the director admits that it is not worth completely abandoning this technology.
Recall, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" confidently started at the box office, demonstrating strong box office receipts in the first days of screening. The third installment of James Cameron's cult franchise earned USD 36.5 million in North America on Friday alone and is projected to finish its opening weekend with a domestic total of USD 90 million. The worldwide total could reach USD 365 million.
