North Korea shown hull of nuclear submarine: experts do not exclude russian participation

North Korea has publicly shown for the first time the welded hull of a submarine with a nuclear power plant. According to experts, components or technologies from russia could have been used in its creation.

This was reported by The New York Times.

The appearance of footage of the new boat coincided with the arrival of the American nuclear submarine USS Greeneville at a naval base in South Korea. The North Korean Ministry of Defense called this visit "a serious manifestation of military escalation."

On December 25, North Korean state media released a video in which the country's leader Kim Jong Un inspects the hull of a future nuclear submarine. Experts suggest that a nuclear reactor may already be installed inside the structure.

Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, believes that the North Korea could have received technical support from russia. According to him, such cooperation could be part of an exchange for the supply of North Korean weapons and military personnel to participate in the russian war against Ukraine.

The project to create a nuclear submarine was prioritized by Kim Jong Un back in 2021. According to analysts, the submarine could potentially carry ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as torpedo weapons. Official Pyongyang has not yet disclosed the timing of the boat's commissioning.

Recall, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that his country should quickly expand its nuclear arsenal, against the backdrop of military exercises by the United States and South Korea, which he called "an obvious manifestation of their desire to provoke war."
