As a result of russian massive attacks on the Pivdennyi port (Odesa Region), vegetable oil leaked into the water area. The port area is closed until the consequences of the leakage are fully eliminated.
It was reported by the Ukrainian Seaports Authority.
"As a result of massive attacks in recent days, a leak of vegetable oil into the water area was recorded on the infrastructure of the Pivdennyi port," the message says.
The USPA noted that since the port was under continuous shelling for the first two days after the attack, work to localize the leak could be carried out only partially - only in between air raids, in compliance with the requirements of safety rules for personnel.
At that time, the specialists were gradually blocking the water area with booms, and after the security situation stabilized, they were installed in full. Specialized pollutant collection vessels were involved in the work.
The Pivdennyi port is currently temporarily closed until the consequences of the vegetable oil leak are fully eliminated.
"It is important to note that we are talking about vegetable oil, which is an organic substance and is subject to natural biological decomposition. The USPA, together with all the services involved, is taking all possible measures to localize and prevent further spread of the pollution, taking into account current security and weather conditions," the agency summarized.
As a reminder, as a result of the morning shelling by the russian federation on December 20, the Allseeds oil transshipment terminal was damaged, which led to the loss of thousands of tons of sunflower oil.
Meanwhile, today, December 24, in the city of Odesa, near the beaches of Dolphin and Lanzheron, oil-like spots were found.
The head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Serhii Lysak, specified that as a result of the enemy attack on the Pivdennyi port, containers with flour and vegetable oil caught fire. As a result, combustion products and vegetable oil got into the Black Sea, which led to the pollution of the coastal zone of Odesa.
Lysak explained that vegetable oil in seawater forms a film on the surface that limits the access of oxygen and light to marine organisms and can lead to their death.
The State Ecological Inspectorate and the Odesa Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine are monitoring the water condition.
"The situation is under constant control. We will inform you about the further progress of the work additionally," he added.
