The Verkhovna Rada has supported in the first reading a bill to rename the kopiika (kopeck) into a shah.
Yaroslav Zhelezniak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Holos faction, announced this on Telegram, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"The Rada supported in the first reading #14093 the renaming of the "kopiika" to "shah". Voted as a basis - 264," he wrote.
The NBU says that almost 14 billion coins are currently in circulation in Ukraine.
In fact, only 50-shah coins will be produced in the future for some time (3-4 years), about several tens of millions of pieces.
All other coins are more than 1 hryvnia.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in the context of large-scale russian aggression, replacing kopiikas with shahs is an important and necessary step, as today kopiikas are in circulation only in countries hostile to Ukraine.
Out of the 15 countries that were part of the USSR, only three still have the kopiika: Ukraine, russia, Belarus, and unrecognized Transnistria.
On November 5, National Bank Governor Andrii Pyshnyi said that Ukraine plans to replace its kopiika coins by the end of the year with "shahs" to get rid of the symbol of moscow's former dominance.
On October 15, the National Securities and Stock Market Commission opposed the renaming of kopiikas to shahs.
On October 3, former NBU Council member Vitalii Shapran said that the Ukrainian coin with the inscription "shah" did not physically exist in circulation on the territory of Ukraine.
