Germany has significantly strengthened Ukraine's air defense by providing the Armed Forces with two powerful Patriot systems and the ninth Iris-T air defense missile system. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has stated this during the opening of the 32nd meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), which is being held via video link, reports Corriere della Sera.

"Since our last meeting, we have significantly strengthened Ukraine's air defense, in particular through the delivery of two Patriot systems promised in August, which was made possible by our Norwegian partners, as well as the delivery of the ninth Iris-T system," Pistorius said.

According to him, next year Germany will also transfer a "significant number" of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles from German arsenals to Ukraine to further strengthen Ukraine's air defense.

"In addition to financing one full package under the PURL mechanism worth USD 500 million. We have provided an additional USD 200 million for the purchase of much-needed weapons. "In addition to funding one full package of $500 million, we have provided an additional USD 200 million to procure much-needed weapons and ammunition from US stockpiles through NATO's PURL mechanism. I am particularly grateful to Norway, the Netherlands and Poland for their quick and pragmatic coordination of funding for these additional PURL packages," the minister said.

The head of the German defense ministry also emphasized the implementation of the recently concluded agreement on cooperation in the defense industry between Ukraine and Germany. He added that the defense companies of the two countries will jointly produce "much-needed drones" for Ukraine as part of this implementation agreement.

Recall that Defense Minister Shmyhal stated that the PURL initiative has become a key source of ammunition for Ukraine's air defense, providing about 75% of all missiles for Patriot systems and almost 90% of missiles for other air defense systems supplied to Kyiv.

As reported earlier, Ukraine has received the air defense systems promised by Germany and personally by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
