British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the countries of the so-called "Coalition of the Willing" have already worked out specific plans to strengthen Ukraine's security, including the possible deployment of foreign troops on its territory. He said this in a commentary to which APA refers.
According to the head of the British government, political consultations between the leaders of the states and separate work of military experts continued in parallel within the coalition. "We had a military process involving military planners. We said we wanted to [develop] military plans for [ensuring security] in the air, at sea, and on land, and for [strengthening] Ukraine's own capabilities," Starmer said.
He clarified that the coalition currently has developed military scenarios in all these areas. "If necessary, this includes ground deployment, but right now the priority is whether we can achieve a just and lasting peace," the British Prime Minister added.
The discussion of the possible involvement of a foreign military contingent in ensuring Ukraine's security has been going on for a long time. During previous meetings of the "Coalition of the Willing", which includes more than 30 countries, the participants were divided in their approaches: some states declared their readiness to send their military if necessary, others opposed, and several countries have not yet decided.
So far, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Baltic States, the Netherlands, and Australia have declared their readiness to deploy troops to Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 15, Reuters said, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to refuse to join NATO in exchange for legally binding security guarantees from the United States, similar to NATO Article 5.
