US President Donald Trump believes that providing Ukraine with security guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5 could force russian dictator vladimir putin to peace. It was reported by The Independent on Monday, December 15, citing American officials with reference to American officials.
The newspaper writes that an American official at a press conference confirmed the readiness of the United States to offer Ukraine a package of security guarantees similar to NATO Article 5.
"This should be submitted to the Senate, and President Trump is ready to do so. Giving this NATO-like Article Five guarantee is something that President Trump believes he can get Russia to accept," the US official said.
NATO's Article 5 stipulates that all members of the military alliance must respond together in the event of an attack on a member state.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 15, Reuters said, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to refuse to join NATO in exchange for legally binding security guarantees from the United States, similar to NATO Article 5.
