Ukraine has pledged to revise the procedure for selecting and dismissing the Prosecutor General to join the European Union.
This follows from a joint statement of European Commissioner for the Judiciary Marta Kos and Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Taras Kachka, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
Ukraine should conduct a comprehensive review of the procedures for selecting and dismissing the Prosecutor General for their compliance with the best European practices with the involvement of the Venice Commission.
Ukraine should also adopt a law in line with European standards and in consultation with the Venice Commission to ensure a transparent and merit-based process for the selection, appointment and transfer of prosecutors to senior and other prosecutorial positions in the Prosecutor General's Office, regional and district prosecutor's offices, including clear criteria and a transparent, competitive merit-based selection procedure, including an assessment of professional competence and integrity.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Ukraine pledged to extend the statute of limitations in corruption cases in 2026 and to cancel the automatic closure of criminal cases due to the expiration of pre-trial investigation terms in order to join the European Union.
