Estonia begins building bunkers on russian border - media

Estonia has begun installing the first concrete bunkers along the border with russia in the southeast of the country.

This is reported by the Defense News portal.

As explained by Krismar Rosin, a representative of the Estonian Center for Defense Investments, seven shelters are ready for installation as of this week. In total, the authorities plan to deploy 28 bunkers by the end of the year.

These structures will become the first line in a network of 600 shelters that are being created to strengthen the eastern flank of the European Union and NATO.

The shelters, which have an area of approximately 35 squares meters, must withstand hits from 152-mm artillery shells. They are part of a multi-level defense system designed to prevent a possible invasion by russia.

According to Rosin, stocks of barbed wire and dragon teeth barriers have already been formed, which are stored on previously prepared sites, awaiting installation if necessary.

The final construction dates for the bunkers remain uncertain, Rosin noted. The structures will be deployed in the municipality of Setomaa and in southeastern Estonia, with 27 of them located on state or municipal land and one on private territory.

"Currently (the bunkers - ed.) are in the process of being deployed, but are not yet fully ready," the Center said in an email.

The network of protective shelters in Estonia is being built as part of the Baltic Defense Line, which Lithuania and Latvia have also joined. Tallinn has allocated EUR 60 million for the implementation of its part of the project, of which about EUR 30 million have been spent so far. A tender for the construction of the remaining 572 bunkers is planned to be held by the end of the year.
