On Friday, December 12, in Lviv, at the age of 66, the famous singer Stepan Giga died.
This was announced by ZAXID.NET with reference to its own sources, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
The artist had been in the intensive care unit of the First Territorial Medical Association of Lviv since November 19 in serious condition; a few days before his death, his leg was amputated due to complications of a viral disease on the background of diabetes.
Stepan Giga was born in 1959 in the village of Bilky in Zakarpattia. He released his first solo album in 1995.
In total, Stepan Giga released five albums during his career. His second album, "Vulytsia Natali" [Natali Street], was released with a circulation of one million copies sold, which made Giga the first in independent Ukraine to receive a Golden Disc.
Among his most famous songs are "Vulytsa Natali", "Tsey son", "Yavoryna" and "Zoloto Karpat".
In 1998, he became an Honored Artist of Ukraine, and in 2002 - a People's Artist.
Stepan Giga is also known as one of the few Ukrainian artists who have never sung in russian.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on November 19, it became known that "due to illness" the People's Artist was hospitalized, where he underwent urgent surgery.
The press service said that his "condition is serious, but stable", and the artist will not give concerts for some time.
According to journalists and bloggers, after the first operation the singer had serious complications, as a result of which he had to undergo a second surgery and amputation of his leg; it was reported that he is in a coma.
