Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he would not support the European Commission's initiative to provide Ukraine with a reparations loan from frozen russian assets if the funds are earmarked for defense needs. He wrote about this on X.
Fico confirmed that he had sent an official letter to the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, warning that Slovakia intends to block all EU decisions regarding the financing of military support for Ukraine in the period 2026-2027.
He notes that he is guided by his "peaceful policy" and will not vote for the allocation of funds for the war, as he is convinced that the conflict in Ukraine "has no military solution." He also criticized the EU's strategy of assistance to Kyiv, calling it "wrong and ineffective."
The head of the Slovak government also expressed his approval of the "peace initiatives" of former US President Donald Trump. Fico said that the use of russian assets for defense purposes could allegedly hinder American plans for Ukraine's post-war recovery. In addition, he criticized Ukraine, mentioning "corruption scandals" and, according to him, the unprofitable termination of gas transit for Slovakia.
The politician emphasized that his government maintains the status of a "responsible partner" in the humanitarian sphere, in particular, by accepting about 200,000 Ukrainian refugees and working on infrastructure projects, and reaffirmed support for Ukraine's membership in the EU, but warned of growing skepticism among member states about Kyiv's rapid progress towards the EU.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, "Go to Ukraine, if you like heroes like that": Fico lashed out at schoolchildren who staged a protest during his speech.
Budapest plans to form an anti-Ukrainian alliance with Slovakia and the Czech Republic, in order to coordinate common positions and present a united front during meetings and summits of the European Union.
