President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he had discussed with parliamentarians the possibility of holding elections during martial law and expects the Verkhovna Rada to present its own vision of this issue. He announced this in an evening address.
He stressed that he would not allow speculation around the topic of elections, especially given the active statements of partners, in particular the United States.
"I will not allow any speculation against Ukraine, if partners - including our key partner in Washington - talk so much and so specifically about elections in Ukraine, about elections under the legal regime of martial law, then we must give Ukrainian legal answers to every question and every doubt," Zelenskyy said.
The President emphasized that Ukraine must give legal and clear answers to all questions and doubts regarding the possibility of holding elections during wartime and expressed his expectation that MPs will offer their vision of further steps.
"I expect that the MPs of Ukraine will offer their vision. Security challenges depend on partners, primarily on America, political and legal challenges must receive answers from Ukraine. And this will happen," the President stated.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Zelenskyy previously outlined three key conditions under which Ukraine can hold presidential elections during a full-scale war. According to him, first of all, it is necessary to ensure the security of the electoral process, guarantee the ability to vote for servicemen at the front, and make appropriate changes to the legislation.
The day before, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Politico that Ukraine needs to hold presidential elections. The American leader suggested that Zelenskyy could win them.
Zelenskyy, who is currently on a working visit to Italy, stated his readiness to hold elections.
As a reminder, on November 30, The Wall Street Journal wrote that at the talks in Miami, the Ukrainian and American delegations discussed the schedule for holding elections in Ukraine.
