On December 10, the digital entry/exit system EES (Entry/Exit System) was launched at checkpoints on the Romanian border, which involves the collection of biometric data of citizens. The State Border Guard Service has announced this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"According to the Romanian Border Police, the digital entry and exit system EES (Entry/Exit System) has been operating at checkpoints since December 10. In particular, at the Dyakivtsi-Racovăț, Krasnoilsk-Vicovu de Sus, and Diakove-Halmeu checkpoints, the system began to enter personal and biometric data. The Porubne-Siret checkpoint will start operating under the new system on January 9, 2026," the statement said.
It is noted that the operation of the EES system at the Solotvyno-Sighetu Marmației checkpoint was launched on October 12. From March 10, 2026, all other checkpoints on the border of Romania with Ukraine will be connected to the EES system.
The procedure includes passport scanning, photographing, and fingerprinting of third-country nationals, including Ukrainians (for children under 12 years old - without fingerprints). During the first border crossing, a digital record of each traveler heading to the European Union will be created, and biometric data will be checked against this record at subsequent crossings
Border guards emphasize that the functioning of the EES system does not affect the general procedure for crossing the border
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on October 28, a new biometric entry/exit control system EES was introduced at all Hungarian checkpoints operating on the border with Ukraine.
Polish border guards started testing the new biometric control system EES in September.
On October 12, the European Union launched a new biometric entry/exit control system EES, it will automatically record the entries and exits of third-country nationals, including Ukrainians traveling to the Schengen area for a short period of time.
The system applies to short-term travel - up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The system will collect digital data: a photo of the face, fingerprints (for persons aged 12 and older), passport data and the time and place of crossing the border with the EU, replacing the stamps in the passport. Failure to provide biometric data may be grounds for refusal of entry.
EES was introduced to speed up border control, improve security, accurately record the length of stay of foreigners in the EU, and combat illegal migration.
