German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the European Union countries to provide guarantees to Belgium and share the risks associated with the confiscation of frozen assets of the aggressor country russia.

According to Reuters, Merz said this in an article published today, December 4, in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

According to him, Belgium cannot rely solely on political promises. The country deserves legally binding guarantees

"It would be unacceptable if one country bore an excessive burden in this regard," Merz wrote.

He called on the EU countries to give Belgium guarantees that the risks associated with russian assets will be shared among all countries of the bloc depending on their economic performance

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on November 17, Bloomberg wrote, citing its own sources, that the European Commission had proposed three options for long-term financing of Ukraine. One of them provides for the use of frozen assets of the russian federation.

In early November, Reuters reported, citing sources in the White House, that the United States fullly supports the EU initiative to confiscate russian assets to finance Ukraine.

On October 1, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke out against the confiscation of russian assets as it would be a violation of international law.
