The lower house of the German parliament, the Bundestag, approved the federal budget for 2026 on Friday.
This was reported by the Spiegel portal.
The parliamentarians allocated EUR 524.5 billion to the government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which is 21.5 billion more than in the 2025 budget.
To cover the expenses of the main budget, it is planned to raise debts in the amount of almost EUR 98 billion. Additionally, loans from special funds are planned for the needs of the Bundeswehr and infrastructure.
More than a third of the budget, or about EUR 183 billion, is directed to the sphere of labor and social protection. Defense spending will increase to approximately EUR 108 billion - this is the maximum figure since the end of the Cold War.
Ukraine will receive EUR 11.5 billion from this budget for the supply of artillery, drones, armored vehicles and other equipment. According to the German Ministry of Defense, this amount of aid is the largest since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion.
