An investigation into the cause of a massive fire at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex has revealed gross violations of safety regulations. Authorities said materials were found on the exterior of the buildings that were apparently not fireproof.
A police spokesman said: "We have reason to believe that the company's management showed gross negligence, which led to this tragedy and caused the fire to spread uncontrollably, resulting in a large-scale disaster."

According to the 2021 government census, there are 1,984 apartments there, designed for about 4,600 residents. The buildings, built in 1983, were undergoing renovations and their facades were covered in bamboo scaffolding. Footage shows the fire spreading rapidly as the bamboo ignited.
The Hong Kong Fire Department classified the fire as a level five fire, the highest on the scale.
