US President Donald Trump said he was not familiar with the conversation between his special envoy and the Russian side about creating a peace plan to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian war. At the same time, he claims that "that's what a dealmaker does."
He told journalists on board Air Force One.
"Well, I haven't heard it. No, but I that's a standard thing, you know, because he's got to sell this to Ukraine. He's got to sell Ukraine to Russia. That's what he's that's what a dealmaker does. You got to say, "Look, they want this. You got to convince them of this." You know, that's a very standard form of negotiation," he said.
Trump reiterated that he did not hear the recording of the conversation, but heard that "that's a very standard form of negotiation."
"And I would imagine he's saying the same thing to Ukraine because each party has to give a take," the US president added.
Asked whether Trump was worried that Witkoff was too pro-russian, he answered negatively.
"No, I think look, uh, this war could go on for years and Russia's got a lot more people and a lot more soldiers, you know. So, I think if Ukraine can make a deal, it's a good thing. I think it's great for both. Frankly, I think it's great for both, but Ukraine's got a, you know, it's much smaller. It's a much smaller group of people. They've lost a lot of people. Russia's lost a lot of people, but Russia has a much bigger pool of people," the American president commented.
As a reminder, Bloomberg published a transcript of a phone conversation between Witkoff and Ushakov, during which Witkoff gave instructions to russian dictator vladimir putin on how to talk to US President Donald Trump and proposed a 20-point peace plan. Regarding the plan, Witkoff said that it would require "Donetsk and maybe a land swap somewhere."
