Marco Rubio's participation in Geneva talks changed tone of discussions on "peace plan" - Politico

The involvement of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the talks in Geneva on the so-called "peace plan" to resolve the russian-Ukrainian war has significantly affected the course of the discussions.

This is reported by Politico, citing sources familiar with the process.

After another round of negotiations between the US and Ukrainian delegations, it became known that Washington will no longer insist on meeting the hard deadline by Thanksgiving, which this year falls on November 27. Four interlocutors of the publication note: the positions of Ukraine and European partners have now begun to be taken into account more significantly.

"We believe that Marco Rubio's participation in the continuation of the negotiations is important. […] After yesterday, the pace has slowed down, and that is good," - said the source of the publication, a representative of one of the NATO countries.

According to Politico, after the chaotic events of last week, Rubio is perceived in US diplomacy as a "cleaner" who should restore order in Washington's approach to the war and turn the course towards allies, not Moscow.

Before Rubio's arrival, it seemed that the process was coordinated by Vice President JD Vance through his longtime friend and special envoy Dan Driscoll. However, according to sources, after Rubio's appearance, he "took the reins" and the negotiations became more flexible.

Also present at the meeting on November 23 were Deputy National Security Advisor Andy Baker, special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. According to sources, they continued to propose approaches that European and Ukrainian representatives consider incompatible with Rubio's line.

"Everything went in the right direction in Geneva. The work is still ongoing, but the situation now looks much better. Rubio is a professional who knows his stuff. But he works for the president, who ultimately makes the decisions," said one of the European officials.

Recall that the US presented an updated package of proposals for resolving the situation in Ukraine and announced significant progress in the talks in Geneva.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin claims that Moscow did not receive any data on the talks between the United States, Ukraine and European countries that took place in Geneva.
