French President Emmanuel Macron said that US President Donald Trump's peace plan needs to be improved to make it acceptable to Ukraine and Europe. He stressed that "we don't want a peace that is effectively a capitulation."
This is reported by Reuters.
"This is an initiative that is moving in the right direction: towards peace. However, there are aspects of this plan that deserve discussion, negotiations, improvement. We want peace, but we don't want a peace that is effectively a capitulation," he said.
Macron also added that only Ukrainians can decide what territorial concessions they are ready to make.
"What has been put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable to the russians. Does this mean that this is something that Ukrainians and Europeans should accept? The answer is no," the French President added.
According to him, Ukraine's first line of defense in the event of peace with russia will be the restoration of its own army, and this cannot have any restrictions. He also noted that frozen russian assets are in Europe, and only Europe can decide what to do with them.
A few hours before the video conference of the so-called Coalition of the Willing offering assistance to post-war Ukraine, Macron also provided detailed information on what security forces could look like "far from the front line" after the cessation of hostilities.
"There are British, French, Turkish soldiers who, on the day of the signing of peace, that is, not in war conditions, will conduct training and security operations, as we do in some countries on NATO's eastern flank. Almost 20 countries have already declared their readiness to actively operate in the air, on land or at sea," he said.
