A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Washington Post that US President Donald Trump was not "too involved" in the details of the peace plan for the russia-Ukraine war.
The publication reported this on Monday, November 24.
"You tell him: 'I'll try to make a deal.' He says: 'Great, try to do what you can.' And that's all the information he has," the official said.
According to him, there was "absolute chaos" in Washington, and even different departments of the White House "didn't know what was going on."
A European official confirmed this: on November 21, Washington was "almost surprised by all this." "Usually, when there is more information, the feeling is different. […] We felt that Washington was surprised by Witkoff's actions," he added.
Recall that the so-called US "peace plan" to end the war in Ukraine was developed in October of this year. Two American officials and a representative of russian dictator vladimir putin took part in its development. Donald Trump did not know about this until the last moment.
On November 19, the American publication Axios wrote that the United States had developed a "peace plan" to end the war in Ukraine. Work on it was carried out in consultation with the russian side.
Later, Axios reported that the document consists of 28 points and contains russia's maximalist demands on Ukraine, which it has been putting forward since 2022.
Ukraine and its European partners did not agree with this version of the plan.
Ukraine and the United States, following the results of negotiations in Geneva on November 23, prepared an updated and revised framework document for peace.
On November 23, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced changes to the American "peace plan" to end the war in Ukraine following the results of a meeting with Ukrainian officials.
