German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had his first telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump regarding the American 28-point "peace plan" for Ukraine.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius has reported this, write the authors of the DW portal.
The conversation was "confidential and binding" and lasted about 15 minutes. The parties agreed on the "next steps" to be coordinated at the level of advisers. Merz will inform his European partners about the content of the conversation.
According to the DPA news agency, Merz became the first leader of a European NATO ally to discuss the controversial plan with Trump.
Europe was surprised by Trump's initiative. According to the agency's sources from German government circles, its own European mediation document is being prepared, which is still being agreed upon.
Further consultations will take place at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 22-23. Chancellor Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are expected to attend, among others.
