OpenAI launches group chats in ChatGPT for all users

OpenAI has announced the global launch of the group chat feature in ChatGPT. After a week of testing in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, the company said that the option will be available to all registered users in the coming days - regardless of whether they are using the Free, Go, Plus or Pro plans.

This is stated in the company's message.

The new feature allows you to create shared chats and share a link to invite other participants. Up to 20 people can participate in the conversation at the same time. You can join either through an existing account or after quick registration. Participants can formulate requests together and respond to each other's messages.

OpenAI emphasized that the content of group chats will not be stored in ChatGPT's memory. The chat author remains the only participant who cannot be removed from the conversation.

The company also clarified that group chats will work on the basis of GPT-5.1 Auto - a system that automatically determines the most optimal model depending on the content of the request and the user's tariff plan.

As a reminder, OpenAI has introduced an update to its flagship model line - GPT-5.1, which replaces GPT-5. The new generation includes two versions: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, which differ in speed, communication style and depth of query processing.
