Ukrainians more actively using non-cash payments - NBU provides details

Cashless payments by Ukrainians with payment cards continue to grow the use of payment cards issued by Ukrainian banks for the first nine months of 2025, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

In total, the number of transactions (non-cash and cash withdrawals) in Ukraine and abroad using payment cards issued by Ukrainian banks during the specified period amounted to 7,069.4 million, and their amount was UAH 5,217.6 billion

Of these, 6,745.7 million transactions totaling UAH 3,414.2 billion were non-cash transactions, which is 11.7% and 9.9% more than in the same period of 2024, respectively

More than 95% of payment card transactions are non-cash.

The share of non-cash transactions in the first nine months of 2025 amounted to 65.4% of the total amount of transactions with payment cards, and 95.4% by number (64.8% and 94.5%, respectively, in the first nine months of 2024).

Analysis of the distribution of non-cash transactions by their type shows that the largest number of payment card transactions by number and amount was accounted for by payments in the trade and service networks - 74.4% and 50.7%, respectively.

Card-to-card transfers in the reporting period amounted to less than a tenth by number (7.3%) and less than a third by amount (26.7%). Payments for goods and services on the Internet accounted for 13.7% by number and 16.1% by amount.

During January-September of this year, the average amount of one transaction using payment cards was as follows:

in retail and service networks – UAH 345 (for the first nine months of 2024 – UAH 322),

card-to-card transfer – UAH 1,847 (UAH 1,976 ),

payment for goods and services on the Internet – UAH 598 (UAH 553 ).

The payment infrastructure is expanding

The number of active pos-terminals in the retail and service networks in September increased by 10.5% (to 548,700 ) compared to January, and the number of sales and service outlets that accept payment cards increased by 14.3% (to 592,500).

The ATM network has decreased by 0.6% since the beginning of the year and in September amounted to 15.6 thousand ATMs.

The number of active payment cards (with which monthly expenditure transactions were made), as well as the number of contactless payment cards, remained almost unchanged.

In general, in September this year, more than half (59.6%) of active payment cards were contactless.

The popularity of contactless payments is growing.

The popularity of tokenized payment cards in Ukraine continues to grow. Their number has increased by 13% since the beginning of the year (up to 18.6 million). Among all active payment cards, almost every third (31.5%) is tokenized.

As a result, a smaller share of transactions is carried out in the retail network with physical reading of data from the card carrier. In the first nine months of this year, the share of such transactions amounted to 1.8% by number and 2.5% by value (in the same period last year - 4.7% and 5.8%, respectively).

The rest of the transactions were contactless (with a contactless card or using smartphones and other gadgets). They amounted to UAH 1,686.3 billion in the first nine months of 2025 (UAH 1,349.1 billion in the first nine months of 2024).

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, new restrictions on card money transfers came into effect in Ukraine on June 1, 2025.

For medium and low risk customers, the monthly limit has been reduced from UAH 150,000 to UAH 100,000 per month

High-risk customers can transfer up to UAH 50,000 per month, the limit remains unchanged.
