November 16 is celebrated worldwide as Button Day, which has become so familiar and indispensable in everyday life that few people pay attention to them. However, it is buttons that make our things convenient and can turn them into art.
Who invented World Button Day
National Button Day was founded by the National Button Society in 1938, which became the official beginning of the celebration, collection and appreciation of buttons.
"Buttons are miniature works of art that tell the story of human ingenuity and creativity," Dr. Gertrude Patterson, a prominent button collector, once remarked.
This mood reflects the essence of what this day was created for - to recognize the historical, artistic and cultural significance of buttons. Since then, this holiday has been celebrated every year on November 16.
Interesting facts about buttons
The oldest known button, discovered in the Indus Valley, dates back to 5000 BC. They were made from shells, geometric shapes. These shells had tiny holes meticulously drilled into them, allowing them to be attached to clothing. However, these early buttons were purely decorative, used as seals or ornaments. It was not until the 13th century in Germany that they evolved into the functional fasteners we know today.

Fashion historian Dr. Elizabeth Wayland Barber noted: "The advent of the buttonhole in medieval Europe revolutionized clothing design, allowing for more fitted clothing and new styles of expression."
This innovation quickly spread throughout Europe, changing fashion and people's attitudes towards their clothing.
In the 20th century, buttons underwent another transformation. The invention of plastic in the early 1900s revolutionized button manufacturing, making them more affordable and accessible to the masses.
- The word button comes from the French word bouton, meaning bud or knob - buttons as decorations date back several thousand years.
- Until the 19th century, most buttons were used for men's clothing. Hooks and lacing were the norm for women's clothing. After the mid-1800s, women became the main consumers of buttons.
- The first political button was used during the first inauguration of a US President, when his supporters wore metal pins with the words "Long Live the President" and George Washington's initials.

Buttons are also a great source of ideas for crafts. There are so many wonderful, cute creations you can make and/or decorate with buttons. They can be used to decorate and update photo frames, watches, purses and bags, headbands, jewelry, and even shoes. Bunches of buttons can be used to decorate almost anything, and even in jars by themselves, they are nice to hold, play with, and admire. Some even collect them.
