The administration of US President Donald Trump has approved the possible sale of air defense missiles worth about USD 3.5 billion to Germany, which is working to increase its own military potential.
This is reported by the authors of the Bloomberg publication.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), Berlin has requested the purchase of 173 Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) Block I missiles and 577 Standard Missile 2 Block IIIC missiles, as well as related equipment.
The DSCA statement said that the deal will help Germany respond to "current and future threats by providing integrated air and missile defense capabilities that can be deployed using its future F127-class surface combat aircraft equipped with the Aegis gun system," and will also improve its ability to operate jointly with the US military and other allies.
However, the publication adds that the German government and the defense contractors that produce these systems have yet to agree on the terms of the contract. Also, Congress could block the sale. Bloomberg recalls that American officials are pushing European members of the UN to take greater responsibility for the defense of the continent, in particular to provide weapons to Ukraine.
