The smallest owl in Ukraine, the pygmy owl, lives in the deep forests of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve.
As reported in the reserve, 39 locations of this species are currently known, and the population size may reach more than 50-60 pairs.
"A small body, big eyes and a sharp gaze of a real hunter - all this is about it," said experts.

The pygmy owl hunts during the day - in the morning and before dusk, which distinguishes it from most owls, which are active only at night. Its diet includes small rodents, birds and large insects.
"Despite its miniature appearance, the owl is a real predator. Before wintering, it even stores food, hiding prey in hollows," the reserve noted.
The bird nests in old woodpecker hollows, and under the "dwelling" you can often find the remains of prey. If during the day the owl gives itself away with its voice or appears in sight, small birds begin to chase it, loudly warning others about the danger.

Let us remind you that feral cows and a herd of Przewalski's horses were again spotted in the Chornobyl Reserve.
