In the capital, two men were served with suspicion of fraud - they deceived an American volunteer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), promising to produce a "laser weapons" capable of shooting down drones.
This was reported by the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.
"Prosecutors of the Obolon District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv have served with suspicion two men who deceived an American volunteer serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, promising to create a laser weapons capable of shooting down drones," the report says.
According to the investigation, in July 2023, a 74-year-old resident of Kyiv and his 59-year-old accomplice introduced themselves as the heads of a private enterprise that supposedly specializes in weapons production. They convinced the serviceman that they were testing laser devices capable of "blinding" enemy drones, and offered to create a similar device for USD 85,000.

"To make the offer convincing, the men demonstrated a device that allegedly burned the wing of the Shahed from a distance of eight meters," the prosecutor's office specified.
The volunteer transferred more than UAH 3.2 million to the scammers in installments, but never received the promised device.

The victim in the case is a US citizen of Ukrainian origin, a volunteer and founder of a military training school in Ukraine. He has been serving in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since the first days of the full-scale invasion.
"During the investigation, the victim has already been compensated USD 20,000. Measures are being taken to return the entire amount of money," the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office added.
As a reminder, in Odesa, law enforcement officers reported a 35-year-old local resident to be suspicious after she tore a national flag from a storefront and threw it in the trash. The incident became known after police noticed a video while monitoring social media.
