Germany sees sharp drop in asylum applications - almost half number last year

The number of initial asylum applications in Germany fell by around 55% in October compared to the same month in 2024, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told Bild.

A total of 8,823 applications were submitted this October, compared to 19,785 last year. "Our migration policy is working. We have significantly reduced the pull factors and the magnetic influence of Germany on illegal migration," Dobrindt said.

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the decline is the second month in a row: in September, the number of applications decreased by 49.6% year-on-year.

Earlier, the authorities reported a significant increase in the number of deportations in 2025, as well as a decision by parliament to abolish accelerated naturalization for foreigners.
