The United States of America has decided to reduce the number of its military contingent stationed in Romania, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced today, October 29.

"Romania and the Allies were informed of the United States' decision to downsize American troops in Europe. The Ministry of National Defence has been informed about the withdrawal of some of the American troops deployed on NATO's Eastern Flank, as part of the process of reassessing the global posture of US military forces," the press release said.

The ministry added that Washington had informed Bucharest of its intention to reduce the number of forces stationed at the Mihail Kogălniceanu military base in Constanța.

The reduction of the US military presence in Europe is a consequence of the new priorities of the US presidential administration. The decision was made taking into account the fact that NATO has strengthened its presence and activities on the eastern flank.

It is noted that about a thousand US troops will remain deployed in Romania, helping to deter any threats.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in May, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said that Washington and its European allies would negotiate on reducing the US military contingent. The talks are to be held by the end of the year.

In March, European NATO members started working on a plan to shift the role of the United States to other members of the alliance.
