Ivano-Frankivsk has banned cycling in the city center.

Ivano-Frankivsk Mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv announced this to the Ukrainian News agency in an interview, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

He noted that the city council's ban applies not only to electric scooters and e-bikes, but also to regular bicycles.

"We did not ban scooters as a phenomenon, because scooters are not evil. But we have banned electric scooters and electric bicycles in the central part of the city. Why in the central part of the city? Because this pedestrian zone is not adapted for the movement of electric scooters," said Martsinkiv.

He explained why the decision was made.

"Unfortunately, we had a case when a child was hit by an e-bike and hospitalized in serious condition. This was one of the main factors for introducing restrictions in the central part of the city. I also know that the Verkhovna Rada has passed a draft law in the first reading, and we believe that the draft law will be finalized and the issue of scooter use will be regulated before the second reading. Because today, unfortunately, law enforcement agencies have very little ability to influence this. And there have already been court decisions when two or three people were riding a scooter. The police issued administrative fines, but the courts then refused to prosecute such drivers. So, of course, we hope that the Verkhovna Rada will also resolve this issue," said the mayor.

In this decision, we also have bicycles.

"That is, ordinary bicycles cannot be used in the city center either. We have prescribed solutions for all types of transport," the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk emphasized.
