On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a national symbol of the United States, symbolizing freedom, democracy, and justice, was grandly opened in New York. The Ukrainian News Agency will tell you interesting facts about the monument.
This monument is a gift from the French people to the 100th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. The statue was created by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and the internal metal structure was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel, the future author of the Eiffel Tower.
The monument was installed on Liberty Island (formerly Bedlow Island), in New York Harbor. In her right hand, "Lady Liberty" holds a torch, and in her left hand, a plaque with the date of signing the Declaration of Independence: July 4, 1776.
Interestingly, for transportation from France to the USA, the statue was disassembled into 350 parts and packed into 214 boxes. In this form, it was delivered by the warship "Isère", and already in New York the monument was assembled and installed on a prepared pedestal.
The structure of the statue consists of a copper shell (over 30 tons) and a steel frame, and the total height from the ground to the torch is 93 meters.
You can get to the Statue of Liberty only by ferry. Tourists can climb the stairs to the observation deck in the crown, from where a breathtaking view of the New York Harbor opens.
The museum, located in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, presents an exhibition that tells the story of the creation of the monument. The exposition contains original drawings, historical photographs and models that illustrate the path from the idea to the embodiment of this world-famous sculpture.
