A wave of discussion arose in the United States after HuffPost journalists drew attention to the tie worn by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. The accessory had red, white and blue stripes - in the same order as the colors of the russian flag.
This is what HuffPost writes.
"Your mom bought it for him - and it's a patriotic American tie, moron," the Pentagon responded to the journalist's question.
As HuffPost notes, Hegseth's tie immediately caused a favorable reaction from russian officials and even the state news agency TASS.
Another Pentagon spokesperson, Kingsley Wilson, emphasized in her statement that Hegseth is "a patriot who respects his country and flag," and criticism from the "left-wing HuffPost" only "testifies to bias."
Journalists recalled that Hegseth had previously appeared in public wearing items with elements of the American flag, and asked if he was familiar with the US flag code, which prohibits the use of the national symbol as an element of clothing. The Pentagon did not answer this question.
As a reminder, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt found herself at the center of a scandal after she posted a screenshot of a correspondence with The Huffington Post journalist S.V. Dáte on social media - in which she answered his question with a vulgar joke.
