Cheap Ukrainian drone interceptors changing rules of air warfare - Business Insider

Ukrainian engineers have developed inexpensive quadcopter-based interceptors that are already effectively shooting down russian strike drones - and this simple, mass-produced technology is changing approaches to air defense.

The idea arose about a year after the start of the full-scale invasion: at first, the use of small drones to intercept the enemy was discussed skeptically, but the experiment quickly turned into a practical defense tool. During one of the massive attacks, such interceptors destroyed more than 150 enemy drones.

Now Ukraine is striving to establish production of up to a thousand such devices daily - because the inexpensive and rapid production of interceptors allows you to counter massive attacks in a simple and scalable way. This model has also interested NATO: Admiral Pierre Vandier and other experts call such interceptors a promising means of protection against drone shock waves.

"With the growth of the number of threats from drones, the pressure on defenders on both sides to use relatively cheap and simple means of countermeasures has also increased," says Sam Bendett, an advisor to the russia Studies Program at the US Center for Naval Analyses.

In addition to its own developments, Ukraine is negotiating international cooperation: this year the United Kingdom signed an agreement on the joint development and production of advanced military systems, which includes the exchange of technologies in this area. Ukrainian companies are also working on solutions to counter guided aerial bombs.

Interceptor technology has already become one of the priorities of the defense industry - its success shows how inexpensive innovations can radically increase the resistance of defense systems against massive drone attacks.
