At a meeting in Anchorage (Alaska, US), russian dictator vladimir putin told US President Donald Trump about Prince Yaroslav the Wise and Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky, as well as that Ukrainians and russians are one people.
The British edition of the Financial Times reported this with reference to its own sources.
Trump greeted putin in Alaska with a big smile and a firm handshake. This gave the impression that the initiative was on the kremlin leader's side. However, behind closed doors, the warmth quickly disappeared, unnamed sources told the newspaper.
According to the sources, in the presence of only a few advisers, putin rejected the US proposal to lift sanctions in exchange for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Moreover, the russian dictator insisted that the war would end only when Ukraine capitulates and cedes territories in the east.
After that, putin went on a "meaningless historical tirade" in which he mentioned princes from the Rurik family, including Yaroslav the Wise, and Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
Eyewitnesses to the conversation between the two leaders claim that Trump was stunned. The US president "raised his voice several times" and at one point "even threatened to leave." In the end, he shortened the meeting and canceled the planned lunch with putin, where the American and russian delegations were supposed to discuss economic cooperation.
Trump called the meeting with the russian dictator "a great and successful day in Alaska." This prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders to rush to the White House to dissuade him from betraying Ukraine's interests. However, the summit turned out to be a turning point of a different kind: it was the lowest point in the Trump-putin relationship, which caused a shift in Washington's position in favor of Kyiv.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, shortly before the Alaska summit, the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine said, that the russian dictator is going to show Trump "historical documents" about the alleged artificiality of Ukraine.
