President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Washington on a working visit, which includes a number of non-public meetings with representatives of the American defense and energy sectors, as well as a speech before members of the US Congress. The main purpose of the trip is to prepare for key negotiations with President Donald Trump. This is reported by Suspilne.
According to sources familiar with the preparation of the trip, the schedule of the visit is built in such a way as to make the most effective use of the time before the meeting of the leaders of the two countries.
Negotiations with US defense industry
In Washington, Zelenskyy will hold meetings with the leadership of the largest American defense companies that may become participants in the large-scale Mega Deal contract package. This concerns the supply of air defense systems, high-precision artillery and ATACMS missiles. The Ukrainian delegation, which includes representatives of the Office of the President, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will present updated proposals for expanding military-technical cooperation between the countries.
Energy block of visit
A special emphasis is placed on the restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The President plans meetings with the heads of leading US energy corporations, who are considering the possibility of joining the modernization of the Ukrainian energy grid and strengthening the protection of critical facilities on the eve of the winter season.
Speech in Congress and political meetings
Before the negotiations with Trump, Zelenskyy will speak in the US Congress. There, he will present Ukraine's vision of continuing military assistance, unblocking defense contracts and the need for long-term guarantees of support. The President is expected to meet with key lawmakers who determine American policy towards Ukraine.
Final stage - meeting with Trump
The culmination of the visit will be a personal conversation between Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, scheduled for October 17. Kyiv sees this meeting as an opportunity to strengthen political guarantees of support and accelerate the conclusion of defense agreements, which, according to the Ukrainian side, may affect the dynamics of the war.
Zelenskyy is also expected to have a brief conversation with journalists, but an official joint briefing between the two Presidents has not yet been confirmed.
An expanded Ukrainian delegation is currently working in the United States, preparing the ground for negotiations and coordinating work on key areas of cooperation between Kyiv and Washington.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on October 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he was conducting "detailed preparations" for a conversation with US President Donald Trump.
On October 13, US President Donald Trump said that he may agree to transfer long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine if russia refuses to end the war.
