US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the United States expects to increase contributions to the PURL initiative to strengthen Ukraine in the war against russia.

He said this before the meeting of NATO defense ministers.

"You get peace when you are strong, not when you use strong words or wag your finger. You get it when you have strong and real capabilities that adversaries respect," he said.

Hegseth said he believes that this is exactly what the PURL initiative is all about.

"Our expectation today is that more countries donate even more, that they purchase even more to provide for Ukraine, to bring that conflict to a peaceful conclusion," he emphasized.

The Pentagon chief said that now is a historic moment for many other things, in particular, thanks to the successes of US President Donald Trump in Gaza and the entire Middle East.

"I believe the world sees that we have a peacemaker president—someone who seeks peace by standing with those aligned with the United States and who advocate for peace. That’s what we saw there. And I hope we can see the same in Ukraine. That’s where our efforts are focused," he summarized.

PURL is an initiative under which European countries buy American weapons and transfer them to NATO for the Ukrainian Defense Forces, which are countering russian aggression.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, meanwhile, Trump and Zelenskyy will meet on Friday, October 17, at the White House to discuss military assistance to Ukraine, including the possibility of transferring Tomahawk missiles.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Olha Stefanishyna explained that American Tomahawk cruise missiles will reduce the threat of russian massive air attacks on Ukraine, by targeting critical military facilities on the territory of the russian aggressor country.
