Odesa Mayor Trukhanov's Ukrainian citizenship revoked - SSU

According to the materials of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov's Ukrainian citizenship was revoked because he holds a valid passport of the aggressor country, russia. This was stated in a statement by the SSU on Tuesday, October 14.

The decision to revoke Trukhanov's citizenship, adopted by the Commission under the President of Ukraine on Citizenship, is based on the evidence base of the SSU and approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine. The Odesa Mayor is a citizen of the russian federation and holds a russian federation passport and a valid foreign passport of the aggressor country.

"According to available data, on December 15, 2015, after the start of the aggression against Ukraine and the temporary occupation of Crimea, as well as part of the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions, Hennadii Leonidovych Trukhanov received a foreign passport of the occupation country. It was issued for a period of 10 years and is currently a valid document," the SSU noted.

The SSU explained that in 2017, Trukhanov's representatives filed a statement with the russian authorities, and as a result, a court in the Moscow Oblast canceled the validity of his internal passport, but in additional explanations it stated that the cancellation or refusal of a person from such a document "does not entail the deprivation of citizenship of the russian federation acquired by a person on a legal basis." That is, Trukhanov is still a citizen of the aggressor country, and also has an identification code that is displayed in the database of the "Federal Tax Service of the russian federation."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on October 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi and the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Oleh Kiper to consider the feasibility of establishing the Odesa City Military Administration.

A petition to Zelenskyy to terminate the Ukrainian citizenship of Odessa Mayor Trukhanov gained the 25,000 votes needed for consideration in a day.

At the same time, on October 13, Trukhanov, who has been the mayor of Odesa since 2014, denied having russian citizenship.
