Ukrainian cargo ship sank off coast of Bulgaria, crew rescued

The Ukrainian cargo ship EILEEN sank in the Black Sea near Bulgaria. All ten crew members - Ukrainian citizens - survived and were evacuated by rescuers. This was reported by Maritime.bg.

The incident occurred on Sunday approximately 140 nautical miles east of Varna. At around 01:00 pm, the crew sent a distress signal after a hole appeared in the ship's hull and the ship began to rapidly take on water.

The rescue operation involved forces from three countries: a Bulgarian border patrol boat, a Romanian ship, a Turkish auxiliary ship and a Bulgarian Navy helicopter.

The Ukrainian sailors were first spotted by members of the crew of the Turkish ship MURAT ILHAN, which was near the Sakarya gas field. They found two life rafts, on which all ten sailors were, and lifted them aboard. The condition of the rescued is assessed as satisfactory.

According to preliminary information, the vessel EILEEN belongs to a Ukrainian company and was built more than 30 years ago. During 2025, it was stopped three times for technical inspections in various ports, and the last inspection in Izmail revealed a number of technical malfunctions.

Currently, experts are investigating the causes of the accident.
