In 10 years, 10-15 million Ukrainians may remain in Ukraine - Mylovanov

According to the "pessimistic forecast" of the former Minister of Economy and Head of the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) Tymofii Mylovanov, in 10 years, 10-15 million Ukrainians may remain in Ukraine.

He said this in an interview with Ukrainian Pravda.

Thus, according to the analytics of the Kyiv School of Economics, the biggest challenge for the Ukrainian economy may be depopulation. Mylovanov noted that, according to his pessimistic estimate, in 10 years, 10-15 million people may remain in Ukraine.

"This will be a bit of a forecast from the air, but my pessimistic estimate is this: 10-15 million Ukrainians may remain in Ukraine. According to the optimistic scenario - if the war stops, we will move to the EU - people will gradually return," he said.

However, according to an optimistic forecast, this figure increases to 30-40 million.

"It will be a bit like in Israel. If there is a recovery, a positive vibe, and we cope with the external challenge, become part of the EU, there will be much more meaning to life here. Because everyone in Ukraine can become whoever they want," he predicted.

Mylovanov noted that many foreigners like Ukraine because it is "more honest than theirs." He gave the example that in some areas of Philadelphia, he claims, the chance of being killed is even higher now than in Kyiv. The KSE director mentioned shootings in American schools.

"I lived on the edge of the ghetto - every other night there was a shootout under my windows. I was often asked: how to survive there? Now they ask the same thing about life under Shaheds. You can live both in the ghetto and under Shaheds," he said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, as of February 2025, over the past 10 years, the population of Ukraine has decreased to 32 million people. At the same time, according to him, about the same number live outside the country.

Also, according to the UN, the population of Ukraine has decreased by 10 million, or about a quarter, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country of russia. This happened as a result of the departure of refugees, a drop in the birth rate and deaths due to the war.

Meanwhile, Mylovanov also said that after the end of the war, Ukraine needs to attract about 10 million labor migrants to ensure positive changes in the economy.
