Georgia's ruling party wins local elections despite protests

The Central Election Commission of Georgia has announced the victory of the ruling pro-russian Georgian Dream party in local elections, which took place against the backdrop of mass protests. This is reported by Echo of the Caucasus.

According to official data, representatives of the Georgian Dream won in all cities and municipalities of the country, including Tbilisi. In 26 districts, the ruling party candidates had no rivals, and part of the pro-Western opposition boycotted the vote.

Exit polls showed a confident victory for the current mayor of the capital, Kakha Kaladze, with 77.4% of the vote. In Tbilisi, the party received over 76%.

After the results were announced, the leaders of the ruling party declared victory, while the opposition took to the streets demanding a "peaceful overthrow of the government." Protesters clashed with police in the center of Tbilisi, and law enforcement officers used water cannons and pepper spray.
